The Story
A ring of black peaks circles the rim of a pale ivory globe. Below the peaks the weave runs clean and unbroken to the base.
It was coiled from werregue palm fiber over weeks of careful work, the strands cut, shredded, and dyed with plants the weavers gather themselves. The color lives in the fiber, not on it.
This piece is one of The Thirty-Five, woven by the Kuperre collective of the San Juan River in Chocó, led by master weaver Crucelina Chocho. Their communities were hit hard by the August 10 earthquake. Every basket sells at full price, and a percentage chosen by the weavers themselves goes directly back to their communities to rebuild.
