The Story

Twenty-two inches of deep black elephant grass, shaped into flowing curves with loose fiber ends left long so the whole form reads shaggy and alive. It commands a corner as floor sculpture and swallows throw blankets as storage, and it looks intentional doing either.

Master Frafra weavers in Ghana’s Upper East Region built it entirely by hand through tight coiling, the grass split, soaked, and softened before a single row was laid. One of one.

My first shipment arrived shriveled like giant raisins. I was told to shower with them to bring the shape back, and I did. They turn pliable when wet and ease gently back into form.

Best displayed on the floor or low pedestal where its full sculptural form can be appreciated. Works as a standalone statement piece or as part of a curated collection of West African woven forms. Its dark tonal presence complements modern, minimalist, and earthy interiors.
