Guardian of Ancient Weaving Traditions
This decorative woven basket reflects the strength and spirit of the Chocó rainforest through bold geometric patterning in copper and ivory tones. Commanding in presence, the design creates a sculptural statement within the rounded form. Handwoven by Indigenous Wounaan artists in Colombia using traditional coil weaving techniques, the pattern draws from a long tradition of Colombian Indigenous basketry where geometry echoes body painting, pottery, and the natural forms of plant and animal life found throughout the forest.
Wounaan artisans create these woven baskets using fibers from rainforest palms such as werregue and chunga. The palm is harvested and carefully split into fine strands, then dyed before weaving begins. Each fiber is wrapped around a palm core as the basket is built coil by coil. This technique requires patience and precision, with artisans maintaining steady tension while forming the geometric design. The thicker coils and longer stitches give Wounaan baskets their distinctive texture, weight, and sculptural durability.
