Trickster Monkey - Ticuna Ceremonial Spirit Doll
DOLL-032
Handcrafted by Ticuna Artisans |★★★★★
This Ticuna monkey figure embodies one of the most beloved mythological characters of the Amazon — the trickster. Indigenous to the tri-border region where Colombia, Peru, and Brazil meet, the Ticuna people distinguish carefully between two kinds of carved figures, encoding the difference through clothing. Clan animals, which represent extended families and ancestral lineage, are shown wearing skirts — the visual marker of old age and wisdom. The monkey is not a clan animal. Like Hanuman in the Hindu tradition or Sun Wukong in Chinese folklore, the Ticuna monkey is a mythological figure of mischief, playfulness, and spontaneity. It wears pants instead of a skirt, a visual code that identifies it immediately as a spirit of energy and play rather than an ancestor.
The body is carved from balsa wood, a lightweight tropical hardwood gathered locally, then wrapped in yanchama — a cloth made by stripping bark from a rainforest tree, soaking it for days, and beating it into a soft, paper-like fiber. The figure is finished with the four traditional Ticuna pigments: black from the genipapo fruit, red from achiote seeds, white from clay, and yellow from earth and plant sources. The geometric patterning is not decorative in the Western sense. It is inherited — a visual language passed from artisan to apprentice across generations, each line carrying the meaning of the maker's clan and training.
Hand-carved and painted by a single Ticuna artisan, this 12-inch figure is entirely unique. Subtle variations in posture, pigment, and line work distinguish each piece. A museum-quality object representing authentic Amazonian ceremonial art, meant for collectors, stylized interiors, or curated groupings where narrative and cultural depth are central.
