Tiny Domino Falls Wounaan Basket - Black & White Miniature

A Cascade of Falling Checkers
Staggered blocks of black and ivory tumble down this tiny vessel like a checkerboard caught mid-cascade, the offset rectangles shifting and stepping as they wrap the rounded body beneath a solid dark rim. In Wounaan cosmology such interlocking geometric patterns mirror the ordered repetitions of the rainforest — woven mats, fish scales, light through layered leaves. This miniature basket was handwoven by a Wounaan artisan in Panama's Darién rainforest.
It is made in the traditional hösig di coil-weaving technique passed down through generations of Wounaan women, using sustainably harvested werregue palm fibers. The crisp two-tone palette comes from natural plant-based dyes: black from the jagua fruit set against the palm's pale natural ivory. Even at this small scale, the tight, even stitching represents weeks of patient craftsmanship.
The pattern reads playful and optical — your eye keeps chasing the blocks as they shift around the form. At roughly two inches across, this tiny decorative basket is made for close quarters: a desk companion, a windowsill accent, or the smallest treasure in a collector's grouping of woven art. Each piece is completely unique, with variations that reflect the weaver's hand.

Deep in the rainforests of eastern Panama, Wounaan artisans create some of the most intricate handwoven baskets in the world. Using finely split palm fibers and an extraordinarily tight coiling technique, each basket is woven stitch by stitch into detailed geometric and nature-inspired designs.
Many pieces take months or even years to complete, making these remarkable Wounaan baskets among the most refined forms of artisan basketry produced today.
