Rainbow Hummingbird Mask - Handmade Ceremonial Art

Spirit Hummingbird of the Darién Rainforest
Every hummingbird ceremonial mask begins as a bundle of shredded palm fiber, shaped entirely by hand into a sculptural form that captures the delicate movement and energy of the bird itself. The curved bill, rounded crown, and layered feather texture emerge through weaving rather than carving, giving the piece its distinctive presence and tactile depth. In Emberá tradition, hummingbirds are associated with movement, vitality, and the unseen rhythms of the forest — spiritual messengers that travel between worlds. 15 inches tall. One of a kind.
Handwoven using natural palm fibers gathered in Panama’s Darién rainforest and dyed with traditional vegetable pigments. The articulating lower beak is woven directly into the structure, opening with a gentle pull and settling closed again naturally — a subtle but remarkable detail that demonstrates the precision and ingenuity of Emberá weaving traditions. Every mask is shaped coil by coil without molds or internal supports, resulting in slight variations that make each piece entirely unique.

These striking pieces transform traditional basketry techniques into sculptural forms, preserving a distinctive tradition of Indigenous woven art.
