Made to Hold a Mask

A woven mask wants to be met face to face. These simple black stands lift an Emberá mask off the shelf and turn it toward the room, no wall hook required. They are the stands I use for my own masks.

Two styles, four sizes. The Spider Mounts hold a mask from underneath on four soft metal arms that bend by hand to cradle the piece. The taller T-Arms slip inside the mask so the mask floats above the base. Every arm is soft metal: shape it to fit, and it holds.

One note: the square base is lightweight plastic, not steel. It keeps the stand light and the price sensible, and it disappears beneath the mask. The bendable arms do the real holding.


Which size do I need?

The height in each name is the center pole. For a Spider Mount, pick one whose arms tuck just inside the mask's outline so the stand vanishes behind it. For a T-Arm, pick a height that lifts your mask clear of the shelf; the crossbar goes inside the piece.

A Note on Display

These stands were designed for one purpose: to hold a woven mask at the right height and angle without drawing attention to themselves. The Spider Mounts cradle a mask from behind or below on four soft metal arms. The T-Arms slip inside the piece so it floats above the base. Every arm bends by hand. Spread the arms wider for a broad mask, or draw them in for a small one, and the metal holds the shape you give it.
