Ceremonial Hummingbird Spirit Captured in Featherwork
This extraordinary handmade feather mask embodies the sacred hummingbird spirit through intricate featherwork handcrafted by Emberá artisans in the rainforests of Panama. In Emberá tradition, the hummingbird represents joy, energy, and the connection between earth and sky — a messenger spirit moving between worlds with lightness and precision. Each feather is carefully selected and layered to create a sculptural ceremonial form that honors generations of indigenous artistic knowledge. 6 inches wide, 17 inches high, 9 inches deep. One of a kind.
Created using traditional Emberá techniques passed through generations of rainforest artisans. Natural palm fiber forms the structural base while each feather is individually positioned by hand to build the hummingbird’s dimensional shape and flowing movement. The intricate feather placement requires exceptional patience and control, with artisans carefully balancing color, texture, and symmetry to achieve the mask’s lifelike presence. Natural dyes and plant-based pigments deepen the tonal variation while preserving the authentic character of this ceremonial art form.

These striking pieces transform traditional basketry techniques into sculptural forms, preserving a distinctive tradition of Indigenous woven art.
