Howler Monkey Mask - Handmade Animal Mask by Embera Artists

Rainforest Spirit Captured in Palm Fiber
This expressive howler monkey mask is handwoven by Emberá artisans of Panama using carefully shredded palm fibers dyed with natural pigments. The bold facial structure and dramatic fiber fringe reflect the monkey’s role as a guardian and messenger within rainforest life, often associated in Emberá storytelling with voice, awareness, and connection between forest communities. Inspired by the animals, spirits, and stories of the forest, the mask transforms traditional weaving into a sculptural form rooted in Indigenous knowledge and cultural expression. 9 inches wide, 9 inches high, 7 inches depth. One of a kind.
Created entirely by hand using traditional Emberá weaving techniques passed through generations of rainforest artisans. Palm fibers from the chunga plant are carefully selected, split into fine strands, naturally dyed with plant-based pigments, and shaped through a structured coiling process that builds both form and expression. The layered fiber fringe and defined facial contours require precise tension control and deliberate placement, allowing the mask to hold its sculptural structure without any internal support while maintaining its vivid texture and movement.
