Row After Row, No Misses
Fine rows of triangles stack up this five-inch Wounaan basket in strict repetition, and repetition is the hardest thing to weave: one triangle slightly off and the whole rhythm breaks. One of one.
The Story
Fine rows of triangles stack up this five-inch Wounaan basket in strict repetition, and repetition is the hardest thing to weave: one triangle slightly off and the whole rhythm breaks. Here nothing breaks.
It was handcrafted in Panama’s Darién rainforest from sustainably harvested palm, the crisp symmetry held row after row from base to rim. One of a kind.
What I envy most in the Wounaan villages is the togetherness: whole generations under one roof, raising babies together, sharing meals and company. Life there has an ease we rarely manage here.
RFB buys directly from the weavers themselves and through their cooperative and tribal representatives, so each basket comes with its story intact.

The dyes come from roots and berries, leaves and flowers, even dark river silt, crushed into pastes or boiled into broths. Some weavers keep private color recipes and trade them with other weavers.

Fairly Made. Community Driven.
Every Wounaan basket is purchased directly from the artist at fair prices that support families and preserve tradition.
Deep in the rainforests of eastern Panama, Wounaan artisans create some of the most intricate handwoven baskets in the world. Using finely split palm fibers and an extraordinarily tight coiling technique, each basket is woven stitch by stitch into detailed geometric and nature-inspired designs.
Many pieces take months or even years to complete, making these remarkable Wounaan baskets among the most refined forms of artisan basketry produced today.
