Companion Monkey - Ticuna Ceremonial Spirit Doll
DOLL-043
Handcrafted by Ticuna Artisans |★★★★★
The Ticuna people of the Colombian Amazon mark the distinction between sacred and mythological figures in a single visual detail: clothing. Clan animals, which carry the weight of ancestral lineage, are shown in skirts — the code for old age and wisdom. Mythological beings wear pants. This monkey figure belongs to the second category. Among the Ticuna, the monkey is not an ancestor but a free spirit, a presence of mischief and playfulness, akin to Hanuman in the Hindu tradition or Sun Wukong in Chinese folklore. The pants are not a costume. They are a code that tells the viewer immediately what kind of being is being honored: not a clan elder, but a wandering, watchful, joyful presence drawn from the canopy.
Every mark on a Ticuna figure is made by hand from materials gathered in the rainforest. The body is carved from balsa wood. The clothing is yanchama, a soft fiber cloth made by stripping bark from a rainforest tree, soaking it, and beating it. The pigments are the four traditional Ticuna colors: black from the dark juice of the genipapo fruit, red from achiote seeds, white from local clay, and yellow from earth and plant sources. The geometric patterning across the figure is not ornament. It is inherited — a visual language passed from artisan to apprentice across generations, each line carrying the meaning of the maker's clan and training.
Authentic ceremonial art from the Colombian Amazon, hand-carved and painted by a single Ticuna artisan. Each piece is entirely unique. Display alone as a quiet sculptural moment, or grouped with other figures from the same arrival for a visual conversation between them. A piece for collectors of indigenous art, anthropologists of object and meaning, and interior designers seeking a statement that carries cultural depth rather than ornament.
