Messenger Hummingbird Woven Animal Mask

Handwoven by the Embera |★★★★★
Sacred Messenger of the Rainforest
This extraordinary woven hummingbird animal mask represents the sacred messenger spirits of Panama’s Darién rainforest. Handcrafted by skilled Emberá artisans, the ceremonial form embodies the hummingbird’s role as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds within indigenous tradition. The elongated beak, layered woven surface, and sculptural silhouette capture both the delicate motion and symbolic energy of one of the rainforest’s most revered creatures. Approximately 7 inches wide, 22 inches high and 11 inches deep. One of a kind.
Created using traditional Emberá weaving techniques passed through generations of rainforest artisans. Fine palm fibers are hand-split, naturally dyed with plant-based pigments, and woven through a meticulous coiling process that forms the hummingbird’s elongated structure and dimensional details. The layered feather textures and flowing silhouette emerge entirely through fiber placement and tension control, requiring weeks of precise handwork to achieve balance, symmetry, and sculptural depth.

In the forest communities of Panama and Colombia, Emberá artisans create expressive woven masks inspired by the animals, spirits, and stories of the rainforest.
Using the same finely shredded palm fibers and natural vegetal dyes found in traditional Wounaan baskets, each mask is carefully shaped and woven entirely by hand.
These striking pieces transform traditional basketry techniques into sculptural forms, preserving a distinctive tradition of Indigenous woven art.
