Jester Monkey - Ticuna Ceremonial Spirit Doll
DOLL-036
Handcrafted by Ticuna Artisans |★★★★★
Along the Solimões River, where Colombia, Peru, and Brazil meet in the heart of the Amazon, Ticuna artisans have carved figures like this for generations. Among the Ticuna, carved beings are distinguished through clothing: clan animals, which represent extended families and ancestral lineage, are dressed in skirts as markers of old age and wisdom. Mythological figures wear pants. The monkey is mythological. It is not an ancestor but a trickster presence of mischief, playfulness, and spontaneity — a figure that moves between worlds, carried into the home not for solemnity but for lightness and energy.
The making of a Ticuna figure begins in the rainforest. Balsa wood is gathered locally and carved entirely by hand into form. It is then wrapped in yanchama, a bark cloth created by stripping fibers from Amazonian trees, soaking them for days, and beating them into a soft, pliable textile. The figure is finished with the four traditional Ticuna pigments: black from genipapo fruit, red from achiote seeds, white from clay, and yellow from earth and plant sources. The geometric markings are not decorative in a Western sense — they are inherited visual language, passed from artisan to apprentice as part of clan identity and training.
One of a limited series of fifteen monkey figures from the Colombian Amazon, each hand-carved and hand-painted by a single Ticuna artisan. Subtle variations in posture, expression, and pigment make every piece unique. At approximately 12 inches tall, each figure carries presence as both cultural artifact and sculptural object — suited for shelving, consoles, or curated interior displays that emphasize narrative and craft.
