Sacred Rainforest Spirit Woven in Palm
This handmade animal mask represents a powerful forest guardian cat, expressed through bold geometric forms and dense palm fiber fringe. Created by Emberá artisans in Panama, the piece draws inspiration from the animals, spirits, and stories of the rainforest, where feline forms are often associated with protection, heightened awareness, and the balance between human life and the natural world. The mask embodies movement, rhythm, and presence, transforming traditional weaving into a sculptural art form rooted in Indigenous knowledge and cultural expression. 11 inches wide, 11 inches high. One of a kind.
Emberá artisans handweave each mask using finely shredded fibers from the chunga palm. The fibers are carefully split, naturally dyed using pigments derived from seeds, roots, and forest plants, and shaped entirely by hand through a controlled coiling process. Drawing on techniques closely related to traditional Wounaan basketry, the structure is built incrementally, allowing form and detail to emerge simultaneously. The dense fringe and geometric facial patterns require precision and patience, resulting in a richly textured, expressive sculptural surface.
